Why did God Allow the Storms

Have you ever asked God, “Why?” Why did my love one pass away? Why did I lose my job? Why did that relationship fall apart? Why do I have this sickness? The truth is that most of us have asked this question at one time or another. Regardless of the reason, our first reaction is usually to seek relief as we repeatedly ask “Why?”

When I hear some preachers talk about the Christian life, it seems they are saying we will go from mountain top to mountain top, without a care in the world. While I fully believe it is a good life living for the Lord, our life is not without troubles (Job 14:1). God has not promised to remove all our troubles, but He has promised to take us through them (Psalm 23:4). He has not promised to eliminate our difficulties, but He has promised to be with us (Hebrews 13:5).

I want you to understand that your questions are important to God. Throughout Scriptures we find hurting people asking questions. Think about David. We can see in the Psalms that he had many questions when he was broken. Sometimes David got his answer but, many times, all he got was silence. But even when David’s questions weren’t answered, his faith in God was stronger than his need to know. Many times, it is these “why questions” that allow us to go before our heavenly Father and pour out our heart to Him.

In dealing with the “why” moments, there are times we will understand quickly, and there are occasions we will understand in a time to come. But many times, we will not understand this side of glory. Once we get to the other side, I do not think it will really matter.

Once I had a member who was helping someone else in the church who needed a new roof. While going up a ladder, he fell and sustained major neck injuries requiring surgery. A couple of hours later, while repairing his neck, the surgeons found cancer. They told him this type of cancer is almost always fatal because it has usually advanced so much before being found. They were able to remove the cancer. Sometimes God will catch us when we fall off the ladders of life, but sometimes He may send an angel to push us off. Either way, it is God.

I had a Christian friend who lost his mid-level management job unexpectedly. He had never worked anywhere else. He had spent over twenty years working his way up in the company. He was devastated. He did not know what to do. Due to living in a small town, he would either take a large pay cut or he would have to relocate his family. This situation went on for three months. Then he found out about a new company in the area, a steel mill, needing someone to do what he was doing at his previous job. A couple of days later, he was working for the company at over twice the pay he had been making. Had he not lost his job, he would have never been looking for a different one. God always has a reason.

In one example, they learned the reason that day, in another, months later. But many times, we may never know. For the believer, our faith says we will walk this out—not by sight, but by faith. Many want to trust in the answer, but we must choose to trust the God of the answer.

Job 14:1 Man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble

Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;
For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Hebrews 13:5 …For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Job 13:15 Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him….

  1. Lovely post Chris….
    But I’m the one asking God…..why the horrible cancer in the first place!
    I love my God with all my heart, soul and mind….and I know He could have kept the cancer away. Great, He let me fall to get a diagnosis. But why did He let the cancer get to me!! You see, the cancer and the fall are metaphors for things and events in my life. So, I’m not arrogant, I’m just wondering WHY God WHY 😉
    Sometimes I feel I know the answer….to make me learn so manyyyy things and be absolutely dependent on Him when there is no other solution…..still learning 🙂
    Have a beautifully blessed day Chris 🙂
